Negating prefixes

Foundation

un-

The default negator for plain English words, especially adjectives and past participles.

When a word came into English from Latin, it usually takes in- instead. 'Unpossible' fails for the same reason 'injust' does — each word keeps the negator its own ancestry gave it.
