Working a mixed passage
FoundationA mixed cloze puts both kinds in one passage. The two kinds need opposite reading. A grammar blank is local — a preposition, an article, a verb form, all fixed by two or three neighbouring words. A vocabulary blank is global and may be answered by a sentence three lines away.
A grammar blank is settled by the words touching it; a vocabulary blank by the argument around it.

Where it bites
Treating a grammar blank as a vocabulary one wastes time; treating a vocabulary blank as a grammar one gets it wrong.
